The Black Knight Satellite: Something Has Been Watching Earth for 13,000 Years

In 1899, Nikola Tesla pointed his most sensitive radio receiver at the sky & heard something he could not explain. Structured. Repeating. Deliberate. He published his conclusion in a mainstream magazine two years later: he believed he had received a transmission from another world. Nobody funded the follow-up. His lab burned down. His papers were confiscated by the United States government within hours of his death.
Whatever Tesla heard that night, something is still up there.
It is called the Black Knight Satellite. It has been photographed by NASA, tracked on radar by the US military, and documented across nearly a century of independent sources. No government has ever claimed it. No government has ever fully explained it. And a Scottish astronomer who analyzed the signal patterns it was producing concluded, in a peer-reviewed journal, that it originated from a star system 203 light years away approximately 13,000 years ago.
The episode is coming soon. Here is what we know.
What Is the Black Knight Satellite?

The Black Knight is the name given to an unidentified object in polar orbit around Earth. Unlike most satellites, which travel along the equatorial plane, this object orbits over both poles, providing complete global coverage with every pass. It is exactly the orbit you would choose if you wanted to observe an entire planet without missing anything.
The documented history of the Black Knight spans from 1899 to 1998. It crosses Tesla's Colorado Springs transmission records, Norwegian radio anomalies confirmed by a world-class physicist, declassified US military radar returns from before the space age, and a set of photographs currently sitting in the NASA public archive that the agency explains as a lost thermal blanket. The thermal blanket explanation covers one photograph from one mission in 1998. It does not cover the previous 99 years.
Nikola Tesla Heard It First
In 1899, Tesla was operating his experimental station in Colorado Springs, studying the electrical properties of the upper atmosphere and developing his framework for wireless power transmission. In the course of those experiments he documented receiving radio signals he could not attribute to any natural or human source. The signals were numerical. Repeating. Structured.
In 1901 he published an article in Collier's Weekly titled "Talking With the Planets." He did not hedge. He stated plainly that he believed he had received a transmission of extraterrestrial origin. Tesla invented the AC motor, the radio, and the foundational principles of wireless power. He was not a fringe figure. He was arguably the most technically capable human being alive at the time.
His funding was pulled. His tower was demolished. He died alone, and within hours of his death the US government arrived to collect his papers.
The Norwegian Signal That Broke Physics
In 1928, a radio engineer named Jorgen Hals began documenting a phenomenon from his station in Bygdoy, Norway that should not have been possible. He would transmit a signal, and then seconds later it would return. Not milliseconds, the way a normal atmospheric echo works. Seconds. As many as fifteen.

A fifteen-second radio delay means the signal traveled approximately 2.8 million miles before returning. There is nothing in Earth's atmosphere 2.8 million miles away. Hals reported his findings to Carl Stormer, one of Norway's most respected physicists and a world authority on the Earth's magnetosphere. Stormer confirmed the observations and analyzed the specific ionospheric conditions under which the echoes appeared. They clustered during periods of elevated solar activity, under geomagnetic states his own theoretical models could not fully account for without something at orbital altitude capturing and re-emitting the signals.
Bygdoy sits at 59 degrees north latitude. A polar orbit object passes over high latitudes with high frequency. If something in polar orbit was using the Earth's electromagnetic field as a carrier medium, Stormer had just documented the exact conditions that would make it work. And at 59 degrees north, that object would be passing overhead regularly.
Three Years Before Sputnik, the US Military Was Already Tracking It
In February 1954, Aviation Week and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch published reports that the United States military was tracking two unknown satellites in polar orbit. Sputnik did not launch until October 1957. Neither superpower had achieved orbital capability at the time of those reports. The stories ran briefly, caused a quiet panic in military and aviation circles, and disappeared almost immediately.
In 1960, TIME Magazine confirmed the US Navy was still tracking a dark, tumbling, unidentified object in polar orbit. By that point multiple US and Soviet satellites were operational. The tracked object was none of them. Nobody claimed it. Nobody explained it.
Both superpowers achieved orbital capability within four years of the 1954 reports. The leap from captured German V-2 technology to functioning satellites in roughly twelve years is an unusually fast development curve. Whether the presence of a functioning orbital object in the years preceding that achievement had anything to do with the speed of it is a question the episode will explore.
The Star Map That Nobody Wants to Talk About
In 1973, Scottish astronomer Duncan Lunan published a paper in Spaceflight, the journal of the British Interplanetary Society. He took the Long Delayed Echo data Hals and Stormer documented in the 1920s and treated the delay patterns as intentional. He plotted them. They formed a star map.
The map depicted the constellation Bootis as it would have appeared approximately 13,000 years ago. The indicated home star was Epsilon Bootis, a binary star system roughly 203 light years from Earth. Lunan concluded the object in polar orbit was an automated probe placed here 13,000 years ago and responding to human radio signals with its origin data. He published this in a professional journal. His methodology was later challenged. He partially walked back his interpretive framework. The scientific community treated the recantation as total repudiation and moved on.
He never said the echoes were fabricated. He never said the phenomenon was not real. He said his method needed revision. That is not the same thing as being wrong about everything.
What If It Was Built by Us?
Here is the theory that changes the entire frame. The 13,000-year timestamp Lunan derived places the origin of the Black Knight at the end of the Younger Dryas, the catastrophic climate period between approximately 12,900 and 11,700 years ago. The Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis, supported by geological evidence across four continents including platinum-group element deposits and vitrified materials, proposes that a comet fragmentation event triggered a global catastrophe that erased a significant portion of late Paleolithic civilization.
Gobekli Tepe, dated to approximately 11,600 years ago, demonstrates that a civilization capable of monumental architecture and complex symbolic systems existed immediately after this period. Something equally capable almost certainly existed before it and was erased.
Under this framework, the Black Knight is not a message from another star. It is a message from us. From a version of humanity that reached a level of technological capability we have not yet matched, watched everything end, and did the one thing still possible. They put something in orbit before the collapse. Something that would survive. Something that would still be there when whoever came after them looked up and finally learned to listen.
13,000 years later, a man in a Colorado tower heard it.
The Episode Is Coming to Fear and Wine
Fear and Wine is an investigative horror podcast that goes where the official record stops making sense. The Black Knight episode covers the full documented history from Tesla's 1899 transmissions through the NASA photographs, the Long Delayed Echo physics, Duncan Lunan's star map analysis, and the lost civilization theory in full. Follow the show now so you do not miss it when it drops.
The Black Knight episode is coming soon to Fear and Wine.
Something has been in polar orbit since before recorded history. Tesla heard it. A Norwegian engineer documented its physics. The US military tracked it before the space age. A peer-reviewed paper mapped its origin. And NASA photographed it and called it a blanket. The full story is coming soon.

This is the most important Lunan source. https://www.duncanlunan.com/blackknight.aspIMPORTANT: Read this before recording. Lunan explicitly distances himself from the "Black Knight satellite" mythology as it is commonly told. He withdrew his star map translation in 1976 after finding errors in the 1920s data he had worked from. He also states the STS-88 photographs have nothing to do with his research. His page is more skeptical than most coverage of him suggests. This does not kill the episode — the gap between what he actually claimed and what gets attributed to him is its own compelling story — but you should know exactly where he stands before you cite him.
